An individual made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was officially announced, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Market Movement in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the month's conclusion rose in the hours before President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the president had been apprehended.

A single trader, which joined the platform last month and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436,000 from a starting bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Platform data shows that traders estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the prior Friday.

However the odds had increased to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the first hours of the next day, suggesting a sudden change in betting activity right before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a transaction based on non-public details," stated Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other traders also earned tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Elected officials are starting to take note.

A new rule put forward on the start of the week would prevent government employees from participating on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in the past few years, with participants able to predict everything from elections to politics.

This sector faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. However it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.

Trading on insider information is against the law in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the event betting industry.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
